Subject: Lower Pool Alkalinity
Hi,
I have a 24' 52" 15,000 gallon above ground pool with a vinyl liner. My alkalinity is a little higher than 120. What can I use to lower it?
Everything I have searched only talks about raising alkalinity.

Thanks,
Jim

Hi Jim, use pH decreaser to lower alkalinity - the same stuff that is used to lower pH levels. The issue is how to lower alkalinity without lowering pH too much, because both will occur. They say (I often say) that to lower Alk more than pH, 'Pool your Acid", and to lower pH more than Alk, 'Walk your Acid". Shutting off the pump, and dumping the acid into the deep end, or setting a bucket of pH down in the shallow end, promotes more Alk reduction, and less pH reduction, while walking your acid (dry or liquid) down the edge of the pool, has the opposite reaction, more pH reduction, less Alk...

In practice however, you may need to lower the alkalinity, and then raise the pH afterwards, perhaps several times. In your case (120 ppm), probably once will suffice, to bring it down around 100 ppm.
